Supporting the Government’s Heritage Conservation Initiatives
In order to enhance public awareness and appreciation of Hong Kong’s heritage buildings, the Development Bureau launched a public awareness campaign on heritage conservation in January 2008. HKU was invited to take part in the exhibition and demonstrate our efforts to conserving our heritage buildings, including those within the future Centennial Campus.
Held at the Heritage Discovery Centre, the exhibition featured various heritage conservation measures and works and introduced successful examples of revitalised historic buildings.
HKU has long recognised its duty to preserve its architectural heritage, some of those being the oldest buildings in the territory. With the development of the new Centennial Campus, three heritage buildings (two former quarters for Water Supplies Department and a treatment works building) will be preserved in-situ and integrated to the design of the new campus. Other historical buildings in HKU, including the Main Building, University Hall, Tang Chi Ngong Building and Hung Hing Ying Building, are also highlighted in the exhibition.
Other highlights of the public awareness campaign included a guided tour of the Yuen Long Ping Shan local heritage conducted by the renowned local designer Mr William Tang, and a photo competition to capture the charm and uniqueness of Hong Kong's historic buildings.
